Here’s another example of a bad idea gaining an absurd amount of popularity (and subsequently leading to coercive government action.)

This reminds me of those ever-popular Resource Depletion scares. The simple math is almost identical; math that fails to consider changes in behavior, the complexity of society, new innovation, and mostly: Economics.
